Sports Injuries
At Timberlane Physical Therapy, we see a variety of injuries from a diverse group of sports. Whether you are a serious athlete or a “weekend warrior” our goals are to help you through your healing process, get you back into your sport as soon as possible and prevent injuries in the future. We believe in the body’s natural healing process, but we also know that sometimes your body needs a little extra help with repair after an injury.
Often, a traumatic sports injury is accompanied by lots of swelling and, consequently, pain from the soft tissue and joint capsules expanding. The staff at Timberlane uses a treatment called manual lymphatic drainage, a kind of massage meant to reduce swelling. Also, we apply a special kind of tape called Kinesiotape to help keep the waste products from inflammation moving away from the area of injury, so that it may heal faster. We may also use more conventional means of reducing inflammation such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis and ice.
Overuse injuries are another group of sports injuries. Common overuse injuries include lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), plantarfasciitis, or rotator cuff impingement. These injuries happen gradually over time, and pain is often present with the sports activity. Recovering from these injuries often involves rest from the sport activity, specific strengthening activities to strengthen muscles around the injured area and anti-inflammatory treatments that were listed above.
An important part of our evaluation of a sports injury is to determine postural alignment. Frequently, a malalignment will affect the healing process, may have contributed to your injury, and may cause the injury to recur. We have the capacity to have custom orthotics made for any foot alignment issues.
