Foot and Ankle Injuries
What We Treat
Many structures around the ankle or foot may contribute to pain or problems with gait. Occasionally, weakness or injuries of the back, hip and knee can contribute to or cause foot pain. Common conditions treated with physical therapy include:
- Ankle sprains
- Achilles tendinitis/tears
- Great toe pain/stiffness
- Orthotic evaluation and fitting
- Plantar fasciitis
- Metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain)
- Tendinitis
- Post-operative rehabilitation of foot or ankle surgeries
Signs and Symptoms
- Foot and/or ankle pain
- Altered gait or difficulty walking, climbing stairs
- Inability to perform recreational activities
- Poor balance or frequent rolling/giving way of the ankle
Treatment
Working with a physical therapist, for foot or ankle pain or history of recurrent injury can be highly beneficial. A complete evaluation of the lower extremity, spine, and biomechanics will identify areas of weakness, muscle imbalance, or instability. A comprehensive exercise program will address all problem areas. We may also evaluate shoes, as proper footwear is just as important to the foot and ankle as sufficient strength, flexibility, and balance. A physical therapist can provide information regarding the best type of shoe based on each individual. Orthotics, which can adjust or compensate for foot and ankle mechanics, may also be a consideration.
Intervention
Physical therapists may use many treatment options to restore optimal function. These may include modalities such as ultrasound and iontophoresis to treat inflammation, gait training, sport or function specific activities, and a comprehensive home exercise program
